It’s rare to see a modern film that so completely encompasses everything wonderful about a genre and style of another era without feeling like a send up or flimsy copy. The House of the Devil is that rare cinematic indulgence that manages to be a perfect tribute to the horror films of the early 80s while maintaining a sense of sincerity and originality. I loved it! …Continued…

As I just mentioned in my review of the Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein Blu-ray disc, I’m a passionate fan of the Universal Monster films of the 30s and 40s. And through them, I’ve become fascinated with the actors who played many of the starring roles. In particular, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, most famous for their iconic portrayals of Dracula and the Frankenstein monster, respectfully. Watching the newly released Karloff & Lugosi: Horror Classics on DVD over the last few evenings has just led me to feel overjoyed that we’ve finally got access to these fantastic films on home video while at the same time, frustrated that we haven’t seen a single horror classic from their era in high-def yet! …Continued…
This movie came out of nowhere. It hit me up-side the head with a perfect blend of comedy, atmosphere and pure horror that, as far as I can tell, has made it the ultimate Halloween experience committed to film. I predict that very soon, for a lot of people Trick ‘r Treat will be necessary viewing every October 31st, just as A Christmas Story has become a holiday staple every December. …Continued…
We’re only a week away from my favourite holiday of the year and I’m gearing up for my annual cinematic Fright-Fest - a week of non-stop horror films! This year, the studios have been kind enough to deliver a lot of great titles that fit right in with that Halloween vibe and will make for perfect viewing, leading up to October 31st. Here’s a rundown of what I’ve got on deck and what I’ve recently checked out, all newly released to Blu-ray! …Continued…
I’ve been lamenting lately the lack of “good ole” zombie movies. It seems everything in the last decade has been about stronger, faster, smarter and angrier zombies and , while I enjoy the hell out of most of them, it feels like a slow degradation of the genre, not an evolution. …Continued…
I’ve got good news, great news and really, truly foul news. I’m sure from reading the headline you can sort out which is which. That’s right, the foul news is that Stephen Sommers’ Van Helsing, potentially the most abysmal film I’ve ever struggled through, is about to stink it’s way onto Blu-ray. Poor Blu-ray! I hope the format survives the insult…
The good and great news might be a little more subjective. …Continued…
Ok, I guess it’s officially Zombie day here on the The Blu-ray Blog, what with the Shaun of the Dead story and the Living Dead at Manchester Morgue announcement. Let’s add one more title then, shall we: the blood soaked, foot dragging, Heil Hitler-ing zombie-fest from Norway, Dead Snow.
I can’t wait to see this. It’s playing over the next few weeks here in Montreal at the Fantasia Film Festival. It’s been a big hit at every fest it’s played at, making a critical ‘killing’ (sorry) at Sundance. And now it’s on it’s way to Blu-ray. But only in the UK. Figures… …Continued…
Back in 2003, I introduced this film to my friends. They’ve never forgiven me. Takashi Miike’s Audition is terrifying. It’s the story of a widower (Ryo Ishibashi) who holds “auditions” for a new girlfriend and winds up hooking up with a beautiful psychopath (Eihi Shiina). The last few scenes will scar you for life. Don’t say I didn’t warn you… …Continued…
I got lucky. The original Friday the 13th was on TV about a week ago and I decided to give it a go. Nostalgia often takes a heavy hand with me. But watching a TV version of the original shortly before getting to see a high-res Blu-ray transfer of the sequel, Friday the 13th Part 2, really helps to pinpoint where the differences are. …Continued…
