We don’t have full details on this yet, but man, getting The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari from Masters of Cinema is tantamount to having this classic German expressionist horror film on a Criterion Blu-ray disc. I can’t wait to see the full list of special features, when it’s finally revealed. If you didn’t feel you needed an all region Blu-ray player before, this UK-only release should prompt you to start looking into the purchase now!
Read MoreHoly crap! Are we actually FINALLY going to see the entire Sopranos series on Blu-ray?! I feel like we’ve been waiting the entire life of the format for this to happen, with the final two seasons having been released ages ago and HBO testing the waters with a Season One release back in 2009. What gives? Why has it taken so long? And does this mean we might actually see other critically acclaimed HBO series on Blu soon? The Wire is in desperate need of some good transfers. The DVDs are atrocious. Fingers crossed!
Read MoreW00T! The best ever Marvel Studios film is on its way to Blu-ray! But we’re gonna have to wait ’till September to get our grabby mitts on it. Captain America: The Winter Soldier succeeds on all levels as a film and I suspect it’ll smash some Blu-ray records when it hits shelves in a few months. Sad to see that the studio is skipping it’s usual “One Shot” short film for this release, though. Does that mean they’re done with the concept for good or do they simply have something bigger and better up their sleeves?
Read MoreOMG OMG! I think I felt like this was never going to ever happen. But here it is – the Twin Peaks fan’s ultimate home video fantasy! This boxed set includes the entire series, everything from the previous DVD sets and adds the feature film, Fire Walk With Me and all the never-before-seen deleted scenes we fans have been hearing about for two decades. This could be the TV-nerd’s dream release of 2014. I can’t wait!
Read MoreLadies and gentlemen, Criterion have The Beatles! It’s hard to believe they were able to grab back the rights to A Hard Day’s Night – possibly the greatest film ever made about a rock band, released by Criterion on laser disc back in 1987 – but it looks like they’ve put the license to good use, affording it a 4K restoration and a brand new 5.1 mix by Apple studios! Exciting! June will also see the long awaited high-def upgrades of several popular DVD titles – Peter Weir‘s Picnic at Hanging Rock, Douglas Sirk‘s All That Heaven Allows and Michelangelo Antonioni‘s l’Eclisse. It’s gonna be a great month for classic Criterion!
Read MoreOliver Stone has re-cut his epic film Alexander. Yet again. On the surface this doesn’t seem like a release I’d be interested in but I’m going to admit I harbour a morbid curiosity about this project. I mean, I really enjoy aspects of the cuts I’ve seen but the film seems flawed at its core – off-the-mark casting and a truly oddball script – to the extent I’m not sure Stone will ever get what he’s looking for out of his footage. Ah well, what do I know. This new “Ultimate” cut could end up being a real revelation. And that’s exciting shit. I kinda can’t wait to watch this and see what the man has cooked up! Alexander: The Ultimate Cut is in stores June 3.
